Description
AN EXHIBITION QUALITY ITALIAN 19TH CENTURY CARVED WALNUT ARMCHAIR AFTER ANDREA BRUSTOLON
An exhibition quality grand Italian walnut armchair carved in the Baroque style after Andrea Brustolon, possibly by the great Florentine carver Luigi Frullini (1839-97).
Italy circa 1850.
The arched toprail carved with reclining putti flanking a shell above a padded embossed leather back within a leaf-carved frame, the lower section with two further putti seated on scrolling arms over a solid seat and a scalloped rail on scrolled supports carved with Atlantes connected by a scrolling stretcher upon which reclines a putto within a garland over a shell.
An amazing tour de force and true tribute to the famous 17th - 18th century carver Andrea Brustolon.
The sculptural excellence of this piece suggests that it would have been made for one of the international exhibitions in the second half of the 19th century. It has the quality of the great Florentine carver, Luigi Frullini, (1839-97), although his preferred historic period tended to be the Renaissance rather than full-blown Baroque as here. After having researched we have found nothing similar for comparison so can only suggest Frullini to be the maker due to its sculptural design and excellence of carving.
