Description
Basquiat: Caught in the Crossfire is a very heartfelt and personal tribute to Basquiat and a large statement piece and with this painting Sax takes up the mantle and upgrades the concept to "No Kings".
This is a painting of museum quality that also has a very personal meaning for Berlin. From his beginnings "locked in the basement" "Basquiat paints like an ape": overworked, over celebrated, turned into a mascot. All used up and dead in the crossfire before he could grow up. A truly poignant rendering of a short life lived in the harsh glare of the media spotlight. In Berlin's own words, "This is my garden of remembrance to Basquiat fellow artist from the streets of Manhattan". (In the 1980's Sax Berlin was a contemporary of Basquiat living working and painting in New York City.)
Oil and acrylic paint and 24ct gold leaf on stretched canvas.
