Experimentation lies at the core of Stephanie Massaux’s practice. Continuously expanding the possibilities of traditional oil painting, the artist explores new techniques to deepen expression and strengthen the dialogue between hand, material, and surface. Through a careful yet adventurous investigation of color, texture, and layered processes using oil paint and cold wax, the artist invites unpredictability into the work. Each layer becomes a record of the painting’s evolution—a visual history that offers viewers an intimate glimpse into its transformation.
Massaux’s imagery is shaped by the interplay of the conscious and unconscious mind, the pulse of the urban environment, and the visual memories and emotional impressions that resurface over time. While the work nods to the legacy of American historical abstraction, it ultimately emerges as a distinct and personal language—rooted in that tradition but reimagined through a contemporary and deeply individual lens.
Stephanie Massaux studied at Purchase College and the School of Visual Arts, and her work is held in private collections across the US, UK, Europe, and Japan. With features in Elle Decor and Homes & Gardens, Massaux’s paintings continue to attract collectors and designers seeking thoughtful, sophisticated contemporary art.
