Description
Pair of antique wooden Chinese stands with mother-of-pearl inlay
Chinese, 19th century
Height 101cm, width 44cm, depth 44cm
These excellent wooden antique Chinese stands are each decorated on two out of their four faces with mother-of-pearl inlay in a simple yet effective floral motif, that complements perfectly the simplicity and clarity of their construction and design. The stands are just over one metre in height, and are perfectly square from top to bottom. The beams that connect the legs are arranged in a simple pattern that is mirrored from one object to the other; indeed every aspect of their design is considered in order to emphasise and embellish the symmetry and harmony of the two pieces together. The limited use of the floral decoration keeps the object clear and prevents them from appearing cluttered, and creates a delightful contrast between the front and back halves of each stand. Faultless in their execution and displaying great sophistication and style, they form an enviable and highly desirable pair indeed. -
