The Panamint (Koso) Indians lived in Death Valley, one of the most inhospitable climates in the world. In spite of the hardships imposed by the climate, this very small tribe of perhaps a few hundred people at its peak wove some of the most gorgeous and technically perfect baskets ever woven. These baskets are prized in the marketplace and are increasingly difficult to find.
Eva Slater, a collector, artist, and scholar of Panamint basketry, wrote this book in 2000. This is a First Edition and is in new condition. In the book, Ms. Slater reviews the characteristics of Panamint baskets and she identifies important early basket makers as well as early basket collectors. This information is quite rare as early collectors rarely documented the baskets they purchased. Eva's work has greatly helped identify important Panamint weavers. The book includes many photos of baskets, weavers, and environment. -
