Black Lalique Biches Vase

Description
A striking vase in Lalique's celebrated "Biches" pattern — biches being the French word for hinds, or female deer — one of the most enduring designs in the Lalique repertoire, originally created by René Lalique in 1932. The ovoid vase is molded in dense, all-over relief with a woodland scene of grazing deer moving among richly detailed foliage and flowering branches, the design wrapping continuously around the body of the piece. Rendered here in opaque black glass, the pattern reads with striking graphic clarity, the raised relief catching light along its edges against the deep, matte-black ground, while the polished black glass collar at the rim provides a glossy contrast to the textured body below.

The vase is etched "Lalique France" to the underside, consistent with the maker's mark used across Lalique's twentieth-century production.
