Description
Bröderna Malmströms metallvarufabrik was a Swedish manufacturer of electric lighting fixtures between 1904 and 1974. The Malmö based manufactory was known for their high quality brass lighting models, but this lamp, designed in 1952, stands out even in their renowned repertoire.
With its nature inspired organic look, this ceiling lamp is reminiscent of Finnish icons, Paavo Tynell’s and Mauri Almari’s design language. Crafted from brass, the design has an elaborate structure with numerous decorative features. Despite that, it is uncluttered and perfectly balanced thanks to the simple canopy and tubing. The delicate frame has been expertly designed to showcase the three glass shades and the curved arms. The brass shade holders have a ribbed edge, similar to the etched pattern on the shades. The cluster also shares design elements with the shade holders, having hollow lines around it. These decorative elements are quite subtle, giving space for the main ornamentation in the form of cast flowers, leaves, and reeds. Stemming from the cluster, these floral elements are sculpted beautifully, with a realistic appearance that praises the manufacturer’s expert skills. The floral decoration can also be found on the finial as a downward facing, blooming flower. The curved flower stems complement the shape of the shades, while their detailed appearance still stands out. The glass shades are amber coloured and have a frosted appearance that diffuses the light beautifully, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The three arms are arranged so that from every angle the decorative elements are visible, showcasing the overarching flowers and the adorned finial. The patina of the polished brass adds further charm and character.
