Description
Lök(en), or “onion” in English, is a lighting model with an iconic shape. Helge Zimdal was a Swedish architect and professor of architecture, a background that is clearly mirrored in the ingenious design of these lamps.
These "Onion" pendants, manufactured by Falkenbergs Belysning AB quickly became a success, and understandably; the organic shape combined with high quality materials and craftsmanship is typical Swedish design, and makes this model one of the most beloved pendants from the Scandinavian Modern era. The sculptural design has a characteristically organic ceiling cup executed in polished brass, internally lacquered white. Each and every feature is equally in service of both function and for, fulfilling the most fundamental Scandinavian design principal of the mid-century era. The brass canopies have a restrained shape that mirrors the shades’. This is just one of the numerous subtle elements that show the great consideration of Zimdal. Another such element is the narrowing neck of the “onions” guiding the eyes to the decorative fabric cords that contrast interestingly with the brass. Whether suspended above a dining table, in a living room, or even as a standalone piece in a hallway, this pendant lamp is a conversation starter. It adds a touch of Scandinavian warmth and a sense of unity with nature to any interior.
Perforated and coloured versions of this model exist, however, this solid brass version showcases the shape the most stunningly. This pair is an iconic example of the Scandinavian design philosophy of simplicity, functionality, and beauty. It continues to be a beloved symbol of Nordic craftsmanship and innovation, offering a touch of Scandinavian charm with an exquisite form and illuminating presence.
