Description
Dining Table Model “Corinto” by Ferdinando Meccani, Italy 1978
The “Corinto” dining table, designed by Ferdinando Meccani for Meccani Arredamento in 1978 was created in tandem with the sideboard that bears the same name. The base of this table consists of cherry wood square frames that are placed on top of each other and then rotated by forty-five degrees. The corners of the square frames are inlaid with wenge wood which creates a stunning contrasts with the cherry wood. The overall shape resembles a column and creates a kind of trompe l'oeil in which the frame parts create a sense of movement, especially when looking through the glass surface. A square glass top pairs beautifully with the sculptural wood work beneath it. The “Corinto” table was handmade in the Meccani workshop in Cascina, located in Tuscany.
Ferdinando Meccani studied at the State Art Institute of Cascina and later at the Florence Institute of Art, where he obtained a teaching of art degree.
He was raised in a family where furniture and art were of great import and he followed in the footsteps of his father and worked in the family atelier, Mobilificio Meccani Marino, which occupied great importance during the 1960's and 70's in creating modern furnishings for the Firm Calamai in Florence. He was also an esteemed interior designer and architect. His works are highly prized and made with exquisite craftsmanship and have been presented in exhibitions all over Italy as well as been featured in design magazines.
Meccani collaborated with world-class artists and designers such as Ettore Sottsass, Michael Graves, Paolo Portoghesi, Ugo La Pietra, Adolfo Natalini, Masao Noguchi, Lanfranco Benvenuti etc.
