Valto Kokko Gold-Plated Pendant Lamp for I-Valo, Finland 1970s

Valto Kokko was a multitalented Finnish designer and artist with a unique design language that translated into every single piece he created, exemplified by this rare futuristic gold-plated pendant lamp.

The 20th century, especially the second half, laid out the foundations of the idea that good lighting is a combination of shape and function. Above all else, Finnish design is thought through to the smallest element as this pendant light exemplifies it. Distinctive might even be an understatement when it comes to this model. The alienesque appearance is the result of the sculptural form with liquid lines and edges. The gold-plated glass shade is delicate and can be easily considered a piece of art just like Kokko’s glassware pieces. The straight, simple rod and canopy brilliantly enhance the unusual shape of the body, while the wide lower half shows off the opening for the light source just as effectively. These proportions show the impeccable sensibilities of Valto Kokko, while the shape reflects his background in glasswork and metal arts. The choice of materials is also noteworthy, the semi-reflective surface displays an interesting play of light and shadow, adding additional depth to the body. The quality also praises I-Valo, the Finnish company Kokko not only designed an entire range of lighting for, but was also the visual department manager of, and was also involved in advertising and exhibitions.

About the Designer:
Valto Kokko (born in 1933) studied at the Free Art School of Unto Pusa and the metal arts department of the Institute of Industrial Arts, in Finland, from 1958 till 1961.

In 1961, Kokko worked for Lohja OY Plastex Ab, a plastic lamp manufacturer. In 1963, he was hired by Iittala as a light fixture designer, and later in 1971 i-Valo, a new line of industrial lights was introduced. Kokko not only designed the entire range of i-Valo but as the new visual department manager he was also involved in advertising and exhibitions.

Kokko created his first extensive glassware set Avec in 1973. His best known set Otso is from 1978. Since 1981 Otso is part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Kokko went on to create the films i-living with glass in 1979 and Vision in Glass in 1980. Both films became the industrial films of the year in Finland. Other famous works from Kokko include Eleglans gold-plated and silver-plated ball lamps and the Saana vase.
