Description
Baltic Neoclassical ormolu, blue and amethyst glass 16-light chandelier
Baltic, Early 19th Century
Height 119.5cm, diameter 76cm
Wonderfully crafted in the early 19th century in the refined Neoclassical style, the chandelier showcases the expert work of artists from the Baltic states.
The central column is made from blue glass and features several graduated dishes. Their edges are adorned with ormolu mounts beautifully framing the material. From the top extend several branches with star-shaped amethyst glass pendants and droplets. Similar pieces, but larger in scale, adorn the lower part of the chandelier. Four ormolu chains and several amethyst glass droplet chains extend down to the bottom ormolu construction creating continuity between the various parts. A subtle purple tinge is created by the amethyst glass, adding a charming element to the design.
Superb ormolu lion masks are mounted around the circumference of the chandelier on the central corona. Twin scrolling branches extend from each one creating a total of sixteen lights. Each branch terminates in a foliate drip pan and refined candle cups. Further amethyst glass droplets and pendants hang from the branches.
Embodying the refined elegance of the Neoclassical style, the chandelier would be a luxurious addition to an appropriate interior space.
