Edward Wormley Model 6026 Mahogany Display Cabinet for Dunbar, 1966

An exceptional Model 6026 display cabinet designed by Edward Wormley for Dunbar, executed in walnut with glass, brass detailing and a rich dark Finish 75.

The architectural design is beautifully balanced, with two central glazed cabinet doors flanked by open display shelves on either side. The cabinet is elevated on slender 9-inch walnut legs terminating in solid brass sabots, while a continuous brass inlay visually separates the cabinet from its base. Original brass hardware provides a subtle counterpoint to the dark walnut finish.

The glazed center doors open to reveal adjustable interior shelving, while the open sides allow objects to be displayed from multiple angles. The combination of enclosed and open storage gives the cabinet an unusually light, transparent quality despite its substantial scale—an excellent example of Wormley's ability to combine traditional cabinetmaking with the architectural vocabulary of postwar American modernism.

This particular cabinet has unusually strong provenance and documentation. It retains its original Dunbar metal manufacturer's label as well as the original factory order tag identifying it as Model 6026. Accompanying the cabinet is correspondence dated August 12, 1966 from Dunbar Furniture Corporation's New York showroom confirming the order of a "6026 cabinet in 75 finish." The documentation records the original order for the Neptune Gift Shop in Wildwood, New Jersey. An original period Dunbar Catalogue photograph illustrating the Model 6026 accompanies the cabinet as well.

Preserved in very good condition, including its original finish, glass, brass hardware and Dunbar labels. The survival of the cabinet together with its factory documentation makes this an especially compelling example for the serious collector of Edward Wormley and Dunbar furniture.
