Description
A striking and highly textural handwoven wall-mounted textile artwork by American fiber artist Barbara Coburn, created during the 1970s studio craft movement. Executed in richly layered natural fibers with an earthy, sculptural presence, the work incorporates embedded semi-precious gemstones throughout the composition, adding subtle luminosity and dimensional contrast to the densely woven surface.
The piece exemplifies the era’s fascination with organic materials, tactile forms, and the intersection of fine art and craft. Coburn’s weaving demonstrates an intuitive balance between structure and spontaneity, with deeply varied textures, tonal shifts, and relief-like surfaces that create changing visual effects depending on light and viewing angle. The integrated stones emerge naturally from the composition, lending the work an almost archaeological or landscape-like quality.
Suspended as a wall-mounted sculptural textile, the artwork functions equally as fiber art and organic modern wall sculpture, embodying the handcrafted aesthetic central to the American studio craft movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Its warm neutral palette and natural materiality make it particularly compelling within both modernist and contemporary interiors.
An evocative and uncommon example of period American fiber art that bridges weaving, sculpture, and mixed-media abstraction. -
