A seedy night street scene becomes an art statement through the lens of Mitchell Funk. He transforms a gaudy commercial sign into a colorful abstraction with the blur of car lights in the foreground. With the advent of the digital world and the internet, these remnants of another world have largely disappeared. Mitchell Funk is not an artist deeply committed to social issues, rather his central concern is capturing the light, shape, color, and form around him. This work is not meant to express the inner feelings and emotions of the artist but how the artist reinterprets the aesthetics of the street. As an undergrad in painting, he studied with great teachers such as first-generation abstract expressionist Robert Richenburg and hyper-realist painter Janet Fish. In Graduate School he worked with famed critic E.C. Goossen and went on to work as a Photographer, New York Advertising Art Director, and Art Collector.
