Description
Art Deco Decanter and Whiskey Glasses by Karl Palda
Item #3745
A stylized Czech Decanter Set with etched geometric and modernist designs in black. The work of innovative and forward-thinking artist Karl Palda. The glasses are an especially nice size- not the tiny shot glasses that often accompany decanter sets of this type, but a size perfect for a serious drink of bourbon, scotch, or whiskey served with a single ice cube. The ebony in sleek modernist and geometric shapes further enhances the clear, frosted, and fluted glass combination. The decanter is a triangular 3-sided shape, which is very unique. The glasses are an 8-sided fluted design.
Step into the rich history of the Deco crystal and glassworks of Bohemia, a legacy that traces back to the 13th Century in the Bohemian region of Haida/ Novy Bor. The 1920s and 30s marked the pinnacle of their innovation, with their creations leading the way in cubism and the avant-garde. This crystal glassware, such as our Czech Decanter Set, played a significant role in Czechoslovakia’s recognition, placing it second only to France in the number of medals and awards won at the 1925 Exposition des Artes Decorative in Paris, where the term Art Deco was coined.
The Sklarske Museum of Bohemian Glass in this region of the Czech Republic has beautiful examples. In contrast, the Corning Museum of Glass in upstate New York has the original Catalogue Pages for Palda designs from the 1930s.
