The Ship, William H. Shailer
Signed and dated (l.r.): W M Marsh, 1846
Oil on canvas, in a period gilt frame.

Over-all in excellent condition, lined, very minor scattered in-painting in sky.
Provenance: Eldred’s Auctions, Cape Cod; Kennedy Galleries, New York; Private Collection, New York.
According to a typed letter on the verso from the Yale University Library, it identifies the William H. Shailer as a bark in Parker’s Signal Book of 1847, where she is listed as hailing from Boston.
Although not many ship portraits by William Marsh are known, he is identified as an accomplished marine painter, as seen here, with great attention to the ship’s sails, rigging, and hull, while capturing the accuracy of the waves.
