This masterpiece was designed in 1948 by Paavo Tynell for Finland House in New York, and handcrafted by Taito Oy in Finland.
Inspired by the culture and traditions of his native Finland, Finnish lighting designer Paavo Tynell is known for his innovative and elegant creations. The Snowflake chandeliers are certainly among his most sought-after pieces. There have been a several iterations of the Snowflake chandelier. Our model reflects and diffuses light in a dynamic, sparkling way, with a perforated brass bowl that illuminates 64 delicate snowflakes suspended in brass mesh and wire. The light has a warm, whimsical effect, similar to candlelight, while recalling winter and snowfall.
Tayto Oy was established in 1918. Tynell dedicated his practice to creating lighting of the highest quality. In addition to manufacturing his own designs, Tynell collaborated with other designers such as Alvar Aalto and Aarne Ervi on custom projects. In response to the growing international interest in Scandinavian design, Tynell began designing specially for the American market. His designs were showcased in the New York gallery Finland House in 1948. Tynell's lighting fixtures have been featured in numerous catalogs, showing his popularity and establishing him as a leading figure in Scandinavian modern design. As highlighted in a catalog, his lighting designs represented the culmination of his "lifelong effort to blend the harmony of lighting with the harmony of living."
