Description
Large pair of antique Royal Vienna porcelain vases
Austrian, Late 19th Century
Height 102cm, diameter 28cm
This remarkable pair of vases, notable for their substantial size, was expertly crafted by the renowned Royal Vienna Porcelain Manufactory, the second-oldest porcelain producer in Europe, established in 1718.
The vases feature a gracefully tapering form, lavishly decorated with historical scenes, each accompanied by gilded borders that describe the depicted themes. The titles include ‘Columbus vor dem Geistlichen Rathe zu Salamanca’ (Columbus Before the Spiritual Council in Salamanca), ‘Die Verhaftung des Grafen von Horn’ (The Arrest of Count von Horn), ‘Columbus in Ketten’ (Columbus in Chains), and ‘Des Sohnes Letzter Gruss’ (The Son’s Last Greetings). The rich and vibrant colours enhance the dramatic impact of each scene, while swirling and geometric gilded motifs adorn the top and bottom, set against a deep navy background.
Creating a cohesive design, the flared neck and socle base are decorated in a similar fashion. Each vase is topped with a delicately crafted porcelain lid featuring a gilded pinecone finial.
Resting on porcelain plinths adorned with additional gilt details, the vases also showcase round cartouches filled with charming celestial imagery.
The underside bears the blue beehive mark of Royal Vienna, and the exquisite paintings are signed by the artist, ‘F. Hölzel’.
Beautifully crafted, this stunning pair of vases represents a highly sought-after addition to any collection of European porcelain.
