About the Artist
Georg August Stahl (b. Kassel, Germany) was a German painter and graphic artist celebrated for his abstract compositions and calligraphic sketches. His early training focused on drawing and watercolor, later studying woodcuts at Kassel's Academy of Fine Arts, a key medium in German Expressionism of the 1920s.
Career Highlights
Emigrated to the Netherlands in 1930, integrating into progressive art circles like R33 in Rotterdam.
Hid during World War II to avoid persecution, later conscripted into the German army, deserted in 1944, and became a POW in England, where he painted and studied.
Returned to the Netherlands post-war, producing monumental abstract works and refined sketches on Japanese paper.
Exhibited extensively, including a 1962 retrospective in Kassel.
Artistic Style
Stahl's work draws comparisons to contemporaries like Willi Baumeister, Fritz Winter, and Ernst Wilhelm Nay, blending abstraction with refined, calligraphic detail.
Collections
His works are featured in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Hessen (Kassel) and the Koehnline Museum of Art, reflecting his enduring influence on European abstract art. -
