About the Artist
George August Stahl (b. 1903, Chicago, I.L.) was a German painter and graphic artist celebrated for his abstract compositions and calligraphic sketches. His early training focused on drawing and watercolor, later studying woodcuts at Kassel's Academy of Fine Arts, a key medium in German Expressionism of the 1920s.
Career Highlights
Returned to the Netherlands post-war, producing monumental abstract works and refined sketches on Japanese paper.
Exhibited extensively, including a 1962 retrospective in Kassel.
Artistic Style
Stahl's work draws comparisons to contemporaries like Willi Baumeister, Fritz Winter, and Ernst Wilhelm Nay, blending abstraction with refined, calligraphic detail.
