'Chapel in the Woods', oil on canvas painting by English School
English, 19th Century
Canvas- Height 56cm, width 77cm, depth 2.5cm
Frame- Height 78cm, width 97cm, depth 9cm
This beautiful painting was created in the 19th Century by an artist working in the English School of painting. The scene depicts a chapel which is situated within a walled enclosure in a woodland setting. A woman and child stand in the foreground and watch a man chopping down a fallen tree for firewood. Birds fly above from the chapel’s tower, as though scattered by the ringing of the bells. The painting portrays a scene of tranquil, everyday life in the countryside. The canvas is signed ‘J F/ 1847’.
The painting is displayed in a giltwood frame which is finely carved with stylised foliate motifs, sinuous leafy vines, and cartouches. The frame is fitted with a title plaque, reading ‘Chapelle dans les Bois / Ecole Anglaise’.
