1930s Modernist Art Deco Floor Lamp Attributed to Gilbert Rohde – Chrome & Black Lacquer, Streamline Design
This rare and visually striking 1930s Art Deco floor lamp, attributed to acclaimed American designer Gilbert Rohde, embodies the essence of early Modernist lighting. Featuring a chrome-plated frame with black lacquered accents, the lamp showcases geometric precision and streamlined elegance—hallmarks of Rohde's iconic design aesthetic.
The floor lamp includes a unique drum shade with a woven textured fabric and contrasting stitched trim, suspended from a cantilevered chrome arm. The base is composed of stacked chrome and black lacquer disks, topped with sculptural black spheres—elements that speak to the influence of both Bauhaus and American industrial design.
A similar lamp was photographed in a Gilbert Rohde-designed interior in the November 1934 issue of Arts and Decoration magazine, reinforcing the attribution. The design also draws stylistic parallels to Donald Deskey, another pioneer of American Modernism.
This Art Deco bridge or task floor lamp is not only functional—ideal as a reading light or beside a lounge chair—but also a statement piece that elevates any interior with its bold, sculptural form.
