A refined and iconic work from the renowned Hagenauer Werkstätte, this 1930s Austrian Art Deco gondolier sculpture by Karl Hagenauer exemplifies the streamlined elegance and whimsy that define the period. Executed in a dramatic silhouette of dark-stained carved wood and hand-worked nickel-plated brass, this stylized gondolier balances with perfect poise at the stern of a sweeping, modernist Venetian gondola. The sleek black form of the boat is crafted from solid ebonized wood, featuring five bold metal accents that represent the traditional ferro at the prow. The figure is riveted securely to the base and holds a metal pole, completing the illusion of movement through water. The underside is fully marked: “HAGENAUER WIEN,” with the firm's stamped "WHW" insignia and “Made in Austria,” attesting to its authenticity and origin in the famed Viennese workshop.
