Description
GREAT SUBSTANCE / ONE TASTE (2025) by Lowell Boyers is a lush, immersive vertical composition that radiates vitality and painterly elegance. The large canvas is richly layered with vibrant mauves, pale pinks, flaxen hues, soft lavenders, fresh greens, and airy sky blues—all grounded by rhythmic accents of black. Together, these colors bloom across the surface in a way that evokes a dreamlike wall of flora—dense and alive—reminiscent of a tropical forest or a jungle at full flourish.
Boyers, a New York-based artist with a B.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design and an M.F.A. from Yale, brings a deeply conceptual layer to his work. He likens raw canvas to the unmarked template of the mind—blank, receptive, and infinite. “Before perception,” he writes, “the mind is a futile but empty slate that we fill and dissipate all phenomena into and onto.” His process is immediate and gestural, echoing the spontaneous elegance of calligraphy.
As with much of Boyers’ work, there’s an immediacy to the gesture and a sense of movement that feels both spontaneous and intentional. The painting seems to breathe, suggesting life in all its layered complexity.
The above work is finished with the canvas wrapped around the stretcher and painted along the edges in a hue drawn from the ground color, offering a seamless and refined presentation.
Great Substance / One Taste has an almost meditative presence—its radiant palette and cascading composition infuse any space with energy, harmony, and a sense of poetic abundance. Whether placed in a modern interior, a richly appointed traditional space, or a minimal, serene environment, the painting offers a visual anchor that is both bold and elegant. Its lush layers of color and light bring the outside world in, transforming the room into a place of beauty, vitality, and contemplative warmth. It is a work that doesn’t just complement a space—it elevates it. -
