Description
A rare 19 - Star American Parade Fag commemorating Indiana Statehood, circa 1870. Printed on cotton, the stars arranged in 4 rows of 4 with 3 additional stars to the right side of canton, mounted and framed. Provenance: Kevin Keim & Peter Keim. Literature: A Grand Old Flag: A History of the United States Through its Flags (2007), 62 & 63. Indiana was admitted to statehood, December 11, 1816, under President James Madison, with a constitution that forbade slavery and required government funding for public schools. Its admission revived the practice of admitting a "Slave" state for every "Free" state within a year of each other to maintain the delicate balance of power in the Senate. Exhibition History " American Flag Festival," Heinz History Center, Pittsburg, PA, 2002.
" To Build and Sustain," The National Heritage Museum, Lexington, MA, 2002.
"These Tattered Flags," The National Civil War Museum, Harrisburg, PA, 2005.
" American Flags," The Bullock Texas State History Museum, Austin, TX, 2016-2917. -
