Description
Dinanderie Metal Art Deco Vase by P. Mercier, France
An exceptional example of French Art Deco metalwork, this spherical vase is a rare signed piece by P. Mercier, executed in the refined and labor-intensive dinanderie technique. Originating from Dinant, Belgium, and perfected by French decorative artists in the early 20th century, dinandrie refers to the art of creating decorative objects in hammered or turned brass, bronze, or copper—often enriched with chemical patinas, engraving, or inlay. It became a favored medium among Art Deco designers for its bold form, metallic shimmer, and capacity for richly patinated finishes.
This striking vase by P. Mercier exemplifies the technique with its subtle interplay of oxidized metal tones, deep bronze, verdigris green, and soft ochre, combined with incised abstract geometric motifs that wrap the entire spherical surface. The incised decoration appears as a stylized rhythmic pattern of intersecting circles and angular checkmarks, suggestive of mechanical or architectural symbols.
The patina is finely executed and shows an expert balance between polish and aged character, adding dimension and complexity to the otherwise minimalist silhouette. Signed "P. MERCIER" on the base, this piece is both decorative and historically important, representing a refined moment in French Art Deco design where craftsmanship and modernism intersected with precision. - More Information
