Description
Antique Louis XVI period marble and ormolu cercle tournant mantel clock
French, Late 18th Century
Height 40cm, diameter 28cm
Dating to the late 1700s, during the reign of King Louis XVI (1754–1793), this exceptional mantel clock showcases the ingenuity and decorative sophistication of French horology from the neoclassical era. It features an intriguing mechanism known as a cercle tournant, or rotating dial clock. In contrast to traditional timepieces, the hour and minute dials revolve completely while the indicator hand remains fixed, offering both visual novelty and technical refinement.
The clock’s architectural composition begins with two circular white marble platforms, which provide a sculptural base for the ornate gilt bronze framework. The upper marble disc supports finely cast gilt bronze columns, each wrapped in finely detailed foliage that curves upward to envelop the central timekeeping mechanism. Around the clock body, a rich display of gilt embellishment partially conceals the movement, leaving only the elegant rotating bands visible, marked with Roman and Arabic numerals.
Topping the structure is a gilded dome, intricately adorned with acanthus leaf motifs and other classical, nature-inspired details, consistent with the refined style of the Louis XVI period. Four vertical gilt bronze supports link the upper and lower marble sections, with a delicately shaped, branch-like mount placed at the centre to enhance symmetry and elegance.
The lower marble base is framed with a beaded gilt border and elevated on four turned gilt bronze feet, lending the piece both height and visual balance. Every element of this clock reflects the precision and luxury associated with French craftsmanship in the 18th century.
This beautifully crafted antique mantel clock is not only a timekeeping device but a decorative centrepiece, perfect for collectors or interior designers seeking a refined and historically significant addition to a classic interior. -
