Chrysler Building Spire from Grand Central Station
-
Description
The Chrysler Building is one of the most photographed buildings in the world, with millions of images of it taken from various perspectives. Yet, it has never been captured quite like this. Mitchell Funk is renowned for reimagining popular postcard subjects powerfully and originally. The present image shows the spire of the Chrysler Building pointing to an illuminating light bulb on the marquee of the Grand Central Station. Funk employs a high depth of field, allowing a near-far illusion where a small object, such as one you can hold in your hand, is on par with a skyscraper of monumental proportions. His mastery of light, composition, and the selection of a deep cobalt blue sky brings life and intensity to a beloved but common place subject.
The image is part of a new epic exhibition, Mitchell Funk Photographs The Chrysler Building for 50 Years.
The Chrysler Building is one of the most photographed buildings in the world. Yet Mitchell Funk's photographs of it are anything but a tourist snapshot. For 50 years, Funk has been celebrating and rediscovering it visually in a way that exemplifies the innovative spirit of its creators.
The work is signed dated and numbered 3/15 lower right recto, with other sizes available, 60 x 40 and it's unframed and printed later. Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper
