Description
The history of American Illustration is filled with battle scenes. Rarely, if ever, have we seen an illustration of raw combat executed in an expressionist style like this. Robert Weaver gets it right: the style matches the subject matter and narrative. The painting's frenetic, emotionally charged brushstrokes and distorted, exaggerated forms echo the frenzied nature of attacking combatants. As an illustration, this work is truly innovative. In depicting Gen. George Custer's last stand, Weaver's work reveals the moment's raw energy and emotional urgency, evoking profound internal moods, psychological states, and existential anxiety. But the creativity does not end there; the artist uses a sand-like texture on the picture's surface that brings the work closer to the event's earthiness and grit. Signed lower right. Framed size 23 x 18
