A rare 16th-century Italian painting. An oil on panel painting depicting a refined Madonna with Child, this artwork is of extraordinary pictorial quality. The most popular iconographic subject of the time is the Madonna del Latte, or Madonna of the Milk, or the Virgin breastfeeding the baby Jesus. The delicate facial features, the gentleness of the hands, the exquisite craftsmanship of the draperies, and the emotional intensity are similar to those of Ambrogio Da Fossano, known as Bergognone (the painting does not currently come with an expertise, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs). His artwork was influenced by Flemish painting, and this is evident in the meticulous and exquisite details of the garments. In particular, the child wears a burnished robe decorated with fine, masterfully applied gold embroidery. The gold inscriptions "IHS" (the first three letters of the name Jesus in Greek) and "Maria" stand out against the dark background. The painting features a splendid 17th-century frame in painted and gilded wood with plant and floral motifs, with some drops of color. The gold leaf is applied over a preparatory base of Bologna gesso and bole, and features abrasions and patinas consistent with its age. On the back are several sealing wax stamps, likely identifying its ownership from an important collection or trust. This artwork has undergone restoration, with restoration of color in some areas, but is generally in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 42 x W 33.5 cm.
