French 19th Century Gilt Mirror
-
Description
Dimensions: 33 ⅜” H x 23 ¾” W x 1 ⅝” D
A French 19th century (circa 1860) carved and gold-gilt wall mirror showing a double-border of mirrored strips to “frame” the larger mirror plate in the center. Stylized carvings of the exposed wood frame–like romantic flowers and a kind of faceted dentil pattern–have organic texture and definition against the metallic reflectivity of the original glass. Patina has exposed much of the red bole substrate underneath the gilt, harmonizing with the patchy foxing of dark oxidation and craquelure in the mirror to draw the viewer in for a closer look.
