Cactus Lamp by Carlo Nason for Mazzega in Clear Blue Glass, Italy 1970s
-
Description
Carlo Nason comes from a long line of Murano glassmakers, but unlike his ancestors, he chose a different path. While his father, Vincenzo Nason, focused on traditional, ornately decorated glasswork, Carlo embraced modernism and began to experiment with new forms and techniques. Over the years, he collaborated with several renowned manufacturers including I TRE, Kalmar, Vistosi, Murano Due, and Firme di Vetro. One of his most enduring partnerships was with Mazzega, driven by his desire to design modern lighting. His collaboration with Gianni Mazzega—a close family friend—marked a turning point in his career. The 1970s and 1980s became his most prolific period, during which he was the creative force behind the majority of Mazzega’s designs.
Design
The striking “Cactus” floor lamp showcases Nason’s innovative approach. Its structure is composed of a metal frame reinforced by crossbars at four different levels. These not only provide stability but also support the lamp’s four light sources, each strategically placed for balanced illumination. The frame features multiple circular hooks designed to hold twenty-four unique glass leaves, which come in three sizes: small, medium, and large. These leaves can be arranged in various configurations, and adjustment screws allow them to either hang loosely or be drawn closer to the frame.
The leaves are made using the ghiaccio technique, recognizable by their crackled surface. This effect is created by plunging hot glass into cold water to induce surface fractures, which are then sealed with a layer of molten glass. The result is a stunning, ice-like appearance where the cracks are visible beneath a smooth, clear exterior. When unlit, the glass emits a mesmerizing, shifting blue hue. Once illuminated, the lamp radiates a warm, golden glow.
Condition
The lamp is in very good condition. The metal frame displays a subtle, even patina with minor scratches and slight color variations, consistent with age and use. -
