Birger Kaipiainen, Very Large Ceramic Plate, Plums and Berries, Arabia 1970s
-
Description
Birger Kaipiainen (1915–1988) is celebrated as a master of decorative ceramics, renowned for his richly colored and ornamental works. Drawing from fantasy and fairytales, his art stood in deliberate contrast to the minimalist ideals prevalent in the mid-20th century. In the 1960s, Kaipiainen began incorporating ceramic beads into his pieces, shifting emphasis toward the intricate surface texture of the object.
This particular plate is a superb example of his work from the 1970s and early 1980s. A partly iridescent glaze brings the depicted flowers and fruits to life with remarkable vitality. The serial repetition of plums and berries, blossoming from a central flower, showcases Kaipiainen’s unique imagination and offers a glimpse into the singular world he created through his art.
The piece is signed Kaipiainen Arabia. Of substantial size, this dish will make a confident and striking statement in any interior setting. -
