A Magnificent Pair of Louis XVI Style Gilt Bronze Candelabra on Porphyry Bases

Description
A Magnificent and Large Pair of French Louis XVI Style Gilt and Patinated Bronze Two-Light Candelabra after Clodion, on Swedish Neoclassical Blyberg Porphyry Bases, circa 1860.
An exceptional and imposing pair of French Louis XVI style gilt and patinated bronze two-light candelabra, finely cast after designs by Claude Michel, known as Clodion (1738–1814). Each candelabrum is masterfully modeled with classically draped figures in patinated bronze, holding aloft scrolling gilt bronze candle arms terminating in acanthus-wrapped nozzles and drip pans. The dramatic contrast between the warm, rich gilding and the dark patination underscores the extraordinary detail and sculptural quality throughout.
The figures are raised on rare Swedish Neoclassical Blyberg porphyry bases—an especially luxurious and coveted material of the 18th century, esteemed for its imperial associations and prized use in both French and Scandinavian royal commissions. The deep violet ground with crystalline flecks provides an elegant and powerful complement to the bronze sculpture above.
This grand pair exemplifies the refinement and opulence of the Louis XVI aesthetic, merging the sculptural genius of Clodion’s designs with the Neoclassical grandeur of porphyry. Comparable examples can be found in the collections of leading institutions underscoring both the rarity and desirability of such works.
A statement of taste and connoisseurship, these candelabra are not merely functional lighting objects but true works of art, embodying the finest traditions of French decorative arts in the late 18th century revival style.
