Description
Pair of Modernist Table Lamps by Marcel Louis Baugniet for Damon, 1930s
This exceptional pair of nickel-plated brass table lamps, designed in 1935 by Marcel Louis Baugniet (1896–1995) for Damon, represents a rare fusion of modernist aesthetics and functional design. With their striking hemispherical shades balanced on ribbed cylindrical supports, these lamps capture the precision and elegance of Baugniet’s avant-garde vision.
The lamps embody Baugniet’s mastery in uniting geometry and utility. Their adjustable dome shades create both dramatic directional lighting and sculptural presence, while the polished nickel surfaces emphasize the clean modernist lines. Pieces of this caliber and rarity seldom appear on the market, making this pair an exceptional acquisition for collectors of early European modernist design.
Marcel Louis Baugniet was one of Belgium’s most significant avant-garde figures, with a career that bridged fine and applied arts. Trained as a painter, he expanded his practice to encompass collage, poster design, tapestry, ceramics, furniture, and lighting. Deeply engaged with the European modernist movement, Baugniet worked alongside leading artists and architects of the 1920s and 1930s. He also contributed as an art critic, influencing the discourse of design in Belgium.
Today, his furniture and lighting designs are recognized as milestones of Belgian modernism, sought after for their rarity, quality, and progressive vision.
Pairs of Baugniet lamps are exceptionally rare. This set is both a functional lighting solution and a sculptural statement, ideal for sophisticated interiors or museum-quality collections. - More Information
