Description
Unique Piece
manufactured by Atelier Tabard
This monumental wool tapestry, “Les Comédiens”, designed by Marc Saint-Saëns and handwoven by Atelier Tabard in Aubusson, is a singular expression of theatrical elegance and lyrical composition. Measuring 220 x 320 cm, the piece reflects Saint-Saëns’ refined visual language, where figuration and symbolism converge with understated chromatic harmony. The tapestry portrays a poetic ensemble of performers—actors, musicians, and masked figures—rendered in soft, earth-toned hues that evoke the timeless ambiance of classical stagecraft. Each figure is delicately stylized, imbued with quiet emotion and gestural grace, conveying the drama and intimacy of performance. As in many of Saint-Saëns’ works, the theme draws on human ritual and tradition, reinterpreted through the contemplative lens of modern French tapestry. Les Comédiens stands as a rare and unique piece, woven with the meticulous expertise of the Tabard atelier, and exemplifies the artist’s enduring commitment to a narrative and symbolic art form grounded in craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
