19th century gilded wooden shield signed F. Barbedienne Paris
-
Description
Large 19th-century decorative shield. Finely carved and gilded wood work with mythological motifs and figures, signed F. Barbedienne Paris, attributed to the great French foundryman Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892). Founded in 1834, Maison Barbedienne became the most famous bronze company in the country, reproducing works by great artists and creating its own original objets d'art that achieved international success.
The plate features a splendid cherub at the center surrounded by four compartments with delightful scenes of winged cupids, bacchanalia, allegories of dance, music, games, and abundance. The refined geometric motifs with black scores divide and punctuate the scenes with meticulously carved figures reminiscent of Renaissance art. Large foundries commonly created wooden models from which molds for bronze casting were then obtained, but this could also be a finished work intended for exhibitions and presentations.
A rare and remarkable piece, a masterpiece perfect for enriching a cabinet of curiosities. A collector's item or decorative element capable of enhancing both classic and contemporary spaces. It shows some signs of age, but is generally in good condition. -
