A EXCEPTIONAL GILT BRONZE GEORGE IV CHANDELIER ATTRIBUTED TO HANDCOCK & RIXION

Suspended from an elaborate gadrooned corona, with foliate decoration and scrolls supporting six chains cascading to the main body. The upper section with acanthus leafs issuing foliate scrolls and swags, with a central artichoke finial. The underneath decorated with a gadrooned dish and lotus flower finial. The chandelier issuing six scrolling branches with foliate decoration, supporting opaque lotus shades.

Originally commissioned for Edward Clive, 2nd Baron Clive of Plassey and 1st Earl of Powis (3rd creation 1804), (1754 - 1839), 45 Berkeley Square, London. Edward Herbert (formerly Clive), 2nd Earl of Powis (1785-1848); Edward James Herbert, 3rd Earl of Powis (1818-91); George Charles Herbert, 4th Earl of Powis (1862-1952); Thence by descent.
Condition
The chandelier has the finest cast and burnished metalwork of this period which is in remarkable condition still retaining its original gilt lacquered finish, the tulip shades are of later date. -
