Description
This rare and whimsical Italian end table, crafted in the 1940s–50s, takes the imaginative form of a stack of antique books, rendered in hand-painted tole. With its lively palette of ochre, vermilion, turquoise, and black highlighted by gilt accents, the piece creates the charming illusion of a miniature library transformed into furniture. Each “volume” bears a title, including Historia, Il Teatro, La Psiche, and Balzac, cleverly bridging classical learning with literary culture.
The hinged lid at the top opens to reveal a hidden storage compartment, offering practical function to match the striking visual appeal. The craftsmanship is evident in the crisp trompe l’oeil details, the subtle shading of the faux spines, and the depth of color that has mellowed beautifully with age. Designed to delight and surprise, this end table exemplifies mid-century Italian taste for playful, illusionistic objects that combined utility with wit.
Such book-form furnishings were especially popular in Italy during the mid-20th century, often produced in workshops that specialized in painted metal and decorative arts. They were meant to enliven a sitting room, library, or study, providing a touch of theatricality while blending effortlessly into both traditional and modern interiors. - More Information
