Description
Very large Japanese bronze hawk sculpture on a stand
Japanese, 20th century
Height 140cm, width 78cm, depth 60cm
This large and impressive Japanese bronze sculpture, dating to the 20th century, depicts a majestic hawk poised on its perch. The entire piece, including the substantial base, is cast in bronze and enhanced with rich painted and patinated finishes that highlight the lifelike texture of the bird’s feathers and the intricate detailing of the stand.
The hawk sits alert and commanding on a horizontal bar, supported by twin uprights rising from a square-form base. A decorative rope with gilt tassel drapes from the perch, adding a ceremonial quality to the composition. The base itself is finely worked, decorated with incised and painted motifs that balance solidity with ornament.
Hawks hold strong symbolic associations in Japanese culture, representing vigilance, courage, and nobility. The craftsmanship here captures not only the bird’s natural strength but also its enduring cultural resonance.
With its striking scale, refined surface treatment, and decorative presence, this Japanese bronze sculpture embodies both artistic skill and symbolic power, making it a statement piece in any collection or interior. - More Information
