Two Danish porcelain ‘Flora Danica’ serving bowls by Royal Copenhagen
Danish, 20th Century
Height 10cm, diameter 23cm
Crafted by Royal Copenhagen in the 20th century, these elegant serving bowls are part of the renowned Flora Danica collection, a series with roots stretching back to the late 18th century. The original service was commissioned by King Christian VII of Denmark, inspired by the Flora Danica botanical encyclopedia - a landmark work documenting the kingdom’s complete plant life. The service was created as a diplomatic gesture following Denmark’s decision not to support the Russian army in a wartime alliance.
These bowls feature exquisitely hand-painted illustrations of Vicia angustifolia Roth (narrow-leaved vetch) and Vinca minor L. (lesser periwinkle), noted on the base by the artists’ handwritten marks. Soft pastel tones highlight the plants’ delicate forms, demonstrating the exceptional skill of Royal Copenhagen’s painters.
The design is further enhanced with gilding along the bases and rims. Panelled borders are decorated with gilt bosses, from which pairs of leaves hang gracefully, all framed within refined rectangular panels. The undersides display the classic three-wave mark, the Royal Copenhagen stamp, and the model number, confirming authenticity.
A testament to timeless craftsmanship and refined design, these bowls capture the artistry and enduring appeal of the Flora Danica service. They are ideal both as decorative display pieces and for presenting fine culinary creations, adding elegance to any collection or dining setting.
