Pair of Rocking Chaises, Folding Back Waikiki Lounge Style CA. 1950s
-
Description
Designed with a clean sculptural profile, these mid-century rocking chaise lounges combine lacquered steel tubing with finely handwoven flagpole cord for a light, architectural presence in a room. Their open, airy lines make them ideal for designers seeking statement lounge pieces that don’t visually weigh down a space, pairing easily with contemporary, coastal, or modernist interiors. A rare opportunity to source matching chaises with strong silhouettes and tactile craftsmanship.
This pair of handcrafted rocking chaises reflects the inventive spirit of the small, highly skilled outdoor furniture studios that flourished up and down the California coast from the 1930s through the 1960s. Over the past forty years I’ve encountered work by independent makers ranging from Robert Lewis and Walter Lamb to Cleo Baldon and Kipp Stewart, as well as numerous talented but undocumented metalworkers around Santa Barbara, Ventura, and the South Coast. These chaises fit squarely into that lineage—made with a maker’s eye rather than a factory’s—where proportion, material honesty, and durability were prioritized over branding.
The frames are formed from gracefully bent and continuous steel tubing, lacquered in matte black and shaped into a long, fluid rocker base that gives the seating a gentle, balanced motion. The cord wrap is executed in white woven flagpole line, tightly and evenly hand-laced across the seat and back to create a resilient, breathable surface. The current cord is in excellent, clean condition and presents beautifully.
The design shifts slightly when the chairs are opened or folded:
• Open: approx. 65" L × 20" W × 34.5" H
• Closed: approx. 63" L × 20" W × 18" H
Whether placed indoors as sculptural accent chaises or outdoors in a protected setting, they bring a distinctly Californian mix of ease, craftsmanship, and sculptural line. Matching pairs are especially difficult to find, and this set is both functional and visually striking—ready for installation in residential or hospitality projects. -
