Description
Abalone Salver
Tiffany Studios
This rare gilt bronze Salver was intended to coordinate with Tiffany Studios’ Abalone Desk Set, which was introduced by the company around 1906. The Abalone set quickly proved to be one of the company’s most popular Desk Set patterns, remaining in production for over twenty years. Noted for its “beautiful workmanship” in the company’s sales brochures, the Abalone set features low relief decoration accented by inset discs of naturally iridescent abalone shell.
This Salver, in its original gold doré patina, is decorated around the raised flat rim with a low relief motif of alternating stylized flowers surrounded by interlacing vines. The inset abalone discs are characterized by variegated tones of purple, pink, green and blue with a silvery iridescence.
This rare example of original Tiffany Studios metalwork is stamped with firm’s mark and model number.
