Description
A reserved and well-considered demi-lune console table by Warren McArthur, dating to around 1935. Works from this period reflect McArthur’s focus on lightweight structural systems and the expressive possibilities of anodized aluminum, and this example conveys those qualities with clarity.
Measuring 15.5" D × 45" W × 28" H, the table is constructed from anodized aluminum tubing joined through McArthur’s patented compressed-joinery method. In this system, the tubing is mechanically compressed into ribbed collars that provide both structural stability and a subtle visual cadence. The joinery motif seen here represents the second of several patterns developed across McArthur’s two decades of production, placing the piece within his early and more experimentally inclined phase.
The gentle arc of the demi-lune form introduces a quiet architectural presence while maintaining the lightness associated with McArthur’s work. A black lacquered top provides a measured contrast to the aluminum structure, preserving the table’s balanced modernist silhouette.
The piece retains its original rubber donut feet, a modest yet characteristic detail. These were designed not only to stabilize the aluminum frame but also to protect the surfaces beneath—stone, brick, or wooden floors—allowing the table to function comfortably in a range of interior settings. Their survival contributes to the overall integrity and completeness of the example.
Overall, the console presents as a representative and thoughtfully engineered work from McArthur’s early output, notable for its condition and its use of a key joinery pattern within his evolving design vocabulary.
Early Warren McArthur pieces with this generation of compressed joinery tend to be well regarded among collectors, and comparable consoles typically settle in the mid–four- to low–five-figure range. The scarcity of the demi-lune form, paired with the presence of its original rubber feet and stable anodized surface, places this example comfortably within established market expectations. Its condition and early construction details support a valuation within that bracket without overstating rarity or demand. -
