Annemarie Davidson “Ghostline” Enamel Plate, California, 1960s

Description
A vibrant and sculptural enamel plate by California studio artist Annemarie Davidson, part of her celebrated Ghostline series. This piece features an exceptional composition of layered blues and greens, with radiating etched linework that creates movement and a sense of depth. The clustered, hand-applied enamel forms at the center feel almost botanical or aquatic, giving the plate a lively, organic energy.
Davidson was a leading figure in the mid-century California enameling movement, known for pushing the medium beyond the decorative into the realm of expressive studio craft. Working primarily in the 1950s and 1960s, she developed a distinct technique of sgraffito (scratching through layers of pigment) combined with jewel-like enamel color fields that seem to glow from within. Her work has become highly collected for both its craftsmanship and its unmistakable visual rhythm.
This Ghostline example is particularly strong, with excellent color saturation and beautifully sharp radiating lines. Whether displayed on a wall or as a table centerpiece, it brings texture, color, and a hit of California mid-century craft history to any interior.
A luminous, collectible example from one of the most important enamelists of mid-century California studio art.
