Green-Glazed Terracotta Jug, Late 19th–Early 20th Century

$ 1,450
  • Description
    This terracotta jug, produced between the late 19th and early 20th century, is finished in a deep green lead-based glaze characteristic of regional European utilitarian pottery. The form is robust and functional, with a rounded body that tapers toward an unglazed footring. A single side spout and opposing handle provide balanced utility, while a fixed arched handle across the top reinforces the vessel’s practical construction. The glaze shows variation in tone, pooling darker in recessed areas and lighter along raised edges, reflecting traditional firing methods rather than controlled industrial production.

    Minor surface irregularities and glaze skips are consistent with hand-thrown terracotta of the period and do not affect stability. Originally intended for storage or liquid use, the piece now functions well as a decorative object, adding color and material contrast to interiors. The jug illustrates the straightforward, durable craftsmanship typical of rural ceramic work from this transitional era.

    This is an antique and having been around for a long time, it will show signs of wear. Antique pieces have very much sought-after character and associated flaws. Please review photos for condition & contact us with questions!
