1980s Manhattan Skyline at Night with Pan Am Building and Chrysler Building

$ 6,500
  • Description
    What appears today as a vintage 1980s Manhattan Skyline was, in its time, the most awe-inspiring of all urban vistas.
    Photographer Mitchell Funk captured its grandeur in 1985 as a nocturne, bathed in vibrant, radiant wine colors. A multi-layered formation of magenta clouds echoes the modulating tones of buildings as they recede in stages back into space. The absence of today's Midtown supertalls and blockish monoliths allows the viewer unobstructed views of the instantly recognizable Chrysler Building. And cleared the path for the Twin Towers - all the way from the tip of Manhattan - to peek over a boxy high-rise. Finally, what may be a nostalgic note to some of the older viewers, the neon logos of once-renowned corporate giants Pan Am and RCA take a commanding position as they beam their identities into the sky. Taken as a whole, Funk's moody image is the very embodiment of urban sensuality, 80s sophistication with a touch of nostalgia.

    It's part of a new epic exhibition, Mitchell Funk Photographs The Chrysler Building for 50 Years.
    The Chrysler Building is one of the most photographed buildings in the world. Yet Mitchell Funk's photographs of it are anything but a tourist snapshot. For over 50 years, Funk has been celebrating and rediscovering it visually in a way that exemplifies the innovative spirit of its creators.
    The work is signed dated and numbered 2/15 lower right recto, with other sizes available, and it's unframed and printed later. Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper
