Large, rare and spectacular, this Art Deco vase by Rometti depicts four scenes with female nudes: one figure is holding theatrical masks representing comedy and tragedy; another is sitting by her baby's basinet; the third is at her toilette, examining her appearance in a hand mirror; and the fourth is standing, facing the viewer. The famed Rometti ceramic works was located in Umbertide, Italy, and not long after its founding in 1927, it became one of the first ceramic companies in Italy -- along with Richard Genori, near Florence -- to bring fresh, modern design to its production. It is our opinion that this vase equals the best work of Gio Ponti, its modern figures in black and white creating bold profiles against the horizontal stripes in blue, red, white and black. The vase is well marked on the bottom.
