George Nakashima Origins Line Coffee Table for Widdicomb, 1961
-
Description
A rare and documented coffee table designed by George Nakashima for Widdicomb, produced as part of the Origins Line, introduced in 1958 and discontinued in 1963. This example retains its original Widdicomb manufacturer’s label dated August 1961 and bears the “Sundra” stencil to the underside, a designation associated with Nakashima’s Origins production for Widdicomb.
The sculptural, freeform top is veneered in Carpathian elm, selected for its expressive, burl-like grain and organic character. The top has undergone extensive professional restoration, undertaken to stabilize the veneer and reestablish the surface while preserving the original form, outline, and material composition. The perimeter is edged in East Indian laurel veneer, which has received minor surface restoration consistent with careful conservation and remains visually crisp in profile.
The table is supported by four hand-carved walnut paddle legs with original leg brackets, all of which remain untouched and retain their original surface. Their sculptural taper and organic profile echo the curvature of the top and represent an important aspect of Nakashima’s design language during this period. The warm walnut tone provides a strong visual counterpoint to the restored elm surface above.
Measuring 65 inches wide, 26 inches deep, and 18 inches high, the table maintains a substantial presence while retaining an elegant, low profile. Produced during the narrow five-year run of the Origins Line, this table represents a scarce example of George Nakashima’s collaboration with Widdicomb, offered with transparent disclosure of restoration and supported by original labeling and factory markings. -
