Wall-Mounted Desk by Charlotte Perriand, France, 1950s
-
Description
Designed by Charlotte Perriand in the 1970s for the ski resort Les Arcs 1800, this wall-mounted desk or console exemplifies her approach to functional, sculptural design in alpine architecture. The solid pine surface features a warm, aged patina and pronounced natural grain, celebrating the material’s organic character. Two discreet black lacquered metal brackets provide support while echoing the architectural language found in Perriand’s Les Arcs furniture systems. The piece functions equally well as a writing desk, console table, or display surface, embodying Perriand’s vision of versatile, modern living integrated into its environment.
Charlotte Perriand (1903–1999) was a pioneering French designer and architect, and a key figure in 20th-century modern design. She collaborated closely with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret before developing a more organic, human-centred approach rooted in nature and craftsmanship. Perriand’s later work, particularly in the French Alps, reflects her deep respect for vernacular architecture and natural materials. Her designs remain highly influential and collectible for their balance of modernism, warmth, and functionality. -
