Description
GOTHIC REVIVAL DOVETAILED WALNUT HALL BENCH
Probably the United States, circa last quarter of the 19th century
34 3/8" H x 20 1/2" D x 55" W; 15 3/4" H to seat
A walnut bench in the Gothic Revival taste, constructed with pegged and tenoned joinery. The back composed of two horizontal slats joined to shaped stiles, the arms stepped outward and terminating in stylized finials. The bench rests on X-form supports united by simple cross stretchers, the design evoking medieval seating while rendered with late 19th-century American restraint. Surfaces display a deep, warm finish that accentuates the natural grain of the walnut.
Condition Report:
Old oxidized surface with discolorations and blemish throughout. Stabilized crack in front right corner with modern nail supplementing, other modern nails lining the seat on the sides. Various hairline cracks throughout. Losses to toes.
